Manchester High School for Girls (MHSG)
A prestigious independent day school for girls in Manchester, founded in 1874.
With a rich history of delivering exceptional education, the school boasts consistently high academic standards and a strong record of securing places for its students at leading universities.
MHSG is deservedly renowned for both of these, but it is also highly-regarded for its dedication to nurturing its students’ overall development.
The school offers a comprehensive and balanced curriculum, encompassing a wide range of subjects across the arts, sciences, and humanities.
Students are also encouraged to engage in a variety of extracurricular activities, including sports, music, drama, arts, and numerous clubs and societies, fostering a well-rounded and enriching educational experience.
The MHSG entrance exam follows a similar format to those of other schools with some unique and exclusive elements.
The assessment aims to identify genuinely bright, curious, and adaptable students, who align with the school’s high standards.
“Manchester High School for Girls is an academically selective school and, as such, sets its own entrance examination. Applicants for entry into Year 7 are normally examined in Mathematics, Essay Writing, Comprehension and Reasoning.
Applicants to the Senior School who do well enough in the initial written examination will be invited to attend for interview. Not all those interviewed, however, will be offered a place.
At the interview stage we are looking for potential, a wide range of interests and a match between the ability of the child and her performance in the entrance examination.
Each candidate will also be asked to bring something of interest with her to talk about with her interviewer.
Girls may be asked to read aloud at the interview, and they may also be given the chance to exhibit their potential through different activities from those set in the initial examinations.
A school reference is requested from the Head Teacher of the applicant’s present school.
Manchester High School for Girls is part of the Greater Manchester Consortium of Independent Schools, and offers of places are made in line with the agreed dates of the Consortium.
Examination results are not made available to individuals.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I complete a lot of practice tests to prepare?
It’s not recommended to complete an excess of practice tests in preparation. While practice is important, overloading with tests may not significantly improve your child’s results. It’s better to focus on strengthening their overall academic skills.
What is the best way to help my child prepare for the exam?
The key to preparation for the MGS entrance examinations is enhancing your child’s academic abilities. By improving their general knowledge and skills, they will be well-equipped to succeed both in the exam and once they are enrolled at the school.
How can reading help my child’s preparation?
Reading is always critical. A wide range off high-quality classic books is an assured way to improve your child’s vocabulary and reading comprehension. This can help them perform better in both the exam and later in their academic journey.
How should I prepare for the exam format?
Familiarize yourself with the exam’s structure (see above). Understand the types of questions, time limits, and any specific instructions. This will help your child feel more confident and prepared on exam day.
How important is physical well-being during exam prep?
Taking care of your child’s physical health is crucial. Ensure they get enough sleep, eat nutritious meals, and engage in regular physical activity. Good health can enhance cognitive function and focus, which are vital for exam performance.
How can we simulate the actual exam environment?
Practice in conditions similar to the actual exam. Time the practice sessions, minimize distractions, and create a quiet, focused environment. This will help your child become more accustomed to the pressure and improve their performance.
